Why should companies hire writers rather than simply using AI to write content?

Let’s be honest, it’s easy to tell when something was written by ChatGPT versus a human being. ChatGPT loves to overuse certain words and phrases that people just don’t have the propensity to use, and it usually sounds way too formal, almost cold.

Too often, we see LinkedIn posts, blog posts, and website copy that scream, “AI wrote this,” and it’s really not a professional look. As writers, we cringe a little on the inside (and/or on the outside) when we see this. While AI can seem like an alluring approach to cut costs, there are too many drawbacks and imperfections at this stage to rely on it fully. Companies still need professional writers to decipher tone, ensure factual accuracy, and connect with audiences on a human level.

Adding that creative human touch

While AI can help generate drafts or ideas, human creativity and intuition often bring out the best in communication. A professional writer can find innovative ways to communicate challenging concepts or make connections that AI might not consider.

For example, a science writer can tell a story around a scientific breakthrough, placing it within a larger context that resonates with stakeholders, media outlets, investors, or customers. A well-crafted narrative can make research and innovation more relatable and memorable, which is something AI may struggle to achieve consistently.

Tailored communication for specific audiences

Empathy is an important tool in writing that AI simply can’t replicate. While it can generate content based on patterns and data, our little AI friend struggles to connect emotionally. Storytelling and narrative building entail a nuanced injection of emotion into text, and this is not something that AI does well just yet.

Professional writers, on the other hand, can tailor their communication to the specific needs, values, and emotions of their audience. By leveraging empathy, writers can craft messages that connect on a deeper level, ensuring that their words are not only understood but also felt. Whether the goal is to educate, persuade, or build trust, human insight allows writers to adapt tone, complexity, and focus in ways that make messages more impactful and relatable.

Ensuring factual accuracy

When it comes to fact-checking, AI just doesn’t cut it. If AI were a human being, it would be the person who loudly and confidently spews misinformation and is totally believed because of their sheer self-assurance.

Since AI tools tend to agree with incorrect information, assert misinformation, and change their answers when asked the same question in a different way, businesses should never rely on them to produce quality work.

Overall, AI should be used in the writing process to help spark ideas and cut down on overall writing time. In other words, it’s still only good enough to be used as a brainstorming tool at best. The creativity, warmth, and flexibility of professional writers are the reasons why they remain invaluable to companies’ communication efforts in the wake of new tech.
